Discount mail is your best option if you mail in volume. In order to

Postage Savings with Automated Mail
To benefit from maximum savings, each mail piece must meet all of
the USPS requirements for barcoded (automated) mail and be CASS
Certified with a recent postal update.
First Class Mail
First Class Letters usually are delivered in 1-3 days. To qualify for
a discount, the mailing must have more than 500 pieces. The following
types of mail must be handled as First-Class Mail: bills and
checks, statements of account, handwritten materials, personal
correspondence, type written materials, and lightweight merchandise.
Standard Rate Mail
Standard Mail is usually delivered in 2-9 days. To qualify for this
discount, the mailer must be less than sixteen ounces, more than 200
pieces, and weigh more than fifty pounds per mailing. Standard rate
materials include: circulars, newspapers, advertisements,
newsletters, small merchandise, printed matter, magazines, solicitation
for donations.
Discounts vary according to the characteristics of your mailing
piece and how it is prepared. Machinable, nonmachinable, and
automation are the three ways the Postal Service classifies how
mail pieces are prepared.
Machinable Mail
A piece is machinable if it can be sorted on Postal Service
processing equipment. Sorting machinable pieces is less work than
sorting nonmachinable pieces. Machinable mailing pieces must meet
specific standards, including size, shape, weight, and be tabbed if
not sealed.
Nonmachinable Mail
A mailing piece is nonmachinable if it cannot be sorted by Postal
Service equipment. A surcharge may be added to these pieces because
they require extra steps to sort the mail.
Common examples of nonmachinable mail pieces include:
First-Class Mail letter weighing 1 ounce or less, Standard Mail letter
weighing 3.3 ounces or less under certain conditions, First Class
Mail flats and parcels weighing 1 ounce or less also with conditions
Automation Mail
Your cards, letters, and flats can receive significant postage
discounts if they are prepared according to automation standards. It
must meet the specific addressing, bar coding, and design standards
established for your service and level of sortation.
Bar codes for Cards, Letters, and Flats
To receive the automation rates for cards and letters, all of the
pieces in your mailing must have a delivery point bar code.
Automation rate flats must have a delivery point bar code and a
zip+4 bar code. All bar codes must meet placement, size, and
legibility standards.
